The South African Table Grape Industry (SATI) represents the table grape industry in South Africa where the emphasis is on the production of fresh grapes that are consumed.
SATI is involved with the supply of both local and international markets. SATI focuses on ensuring that the South African grape production is amongst the best in the world.
SATI dedicated to upliftment in the communities and applies a great deal of emphasis on developing Black South African students and young children.
This is aimed particularly at those wanting to get involved with, and build their careers in the table grape industry, as well as other industries that it supports. This is where their bursary system is focused.
Closing date of the bursary
Each year, the SATI bursary application opens on the 1st July and closes on the 31st August. If you do not receive feedback by the end of January, please note that your application was unsuccessful.
About This Bursary
The SATI bursaries are awarded to Black South African students, particularly focused on land reform beneficiaries. These students must want to be actively involved in the industry with a desire to develop within it.
SATI also has a focus on long-term goals to develop a keen interest from the farm worker’s children and then assist them with their future development. The bursaries offer funding of study costs of students working on SATI funded research projects, and can be either full, partial, or work-back bursaries.
Who Can Apply?
There are four available qualifications depending on where a person’s interests lie, as well as if they achieve the required pre-entry qualifications. This is great as there are various options available for students who have qualifications from Grade 8 and up. The courses must be relevant to the table grape industry and its value-chain. The qualifications include –
1. Tertiary Education (TE)
2. Further Education and Training (FET)
3. Undergraduate degree (acceptance into a university degree required)
4. Postgraduate / honours degree (completion of undergraduate degree required)
Studies in programs / courses, including but not limited to:
– Viticulture
– Horticultural Science
– Plant Pathology
– Entomology
– Soil Science
– Agricultural Economy
Part-time or full-time studies route
Requirements
The main requirement is that a student must want to pursue their career in the industry and/or its value chain. SATI is dedicated to empowering the black communities and so preference will be given to previously disadvantaged and impoverished people. The different study options require the following:
- South African citizen
- For the FET studies – Minimum qualification of Grade 8 or equivalent under SAQA
- For the TE studies – Minimum qualification of Grade 12 or equivalent under the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA)
- For the university undergraduate degree – Meet the degree’s entry requirements
- For the university honours / postgraduate degree – Meet the honours / postgraduate entry requirements
- Individuals who have achieved above average academic results
- Applicants who have secured a partnership with a career mentor
- Applicants with proof of acceptance or registration at an accredited TE or FET institution or who have been accepted within an industry related research project
What does this bursary cover?
The SATI bursary offers the following (these can be either partially, or fully covered):

- Study fees
- Study material
- Accommodation
- Living expenses including meals or groceries
- Any additional expenses – need to be specified and motivated
Career Mentorship
A partnership with a career mentor needs to be secured. The mentor will be involved with developing the student, offering personal growth by assisting the student in working towards independence, developing organisational skills, and implementing strategies. It is preferable that the mentor be involved in the industry.
The career mentor must commit in writing to do the following:
- Co-sign the career mentor agreement
- Ensure funds are being utilised by the student in terms of the signed agreement between the student and SATI
- Ensure the student reports to SATI on a quarterly basis and/or as per request by SATI
- Communicate with SATI if challenges are experienced by the student
- Support the student to address and find solutions for identified problems or challenges
Important Information:
- SATI bursaries will be evaluated each year to ensure fulfillment of the required academic performance. If the progress is not satisfactory, SATI may suspend the financial support and terminate the student’s bursary. The student will no longer be covered as from that date.
- The student must submit a report to SATI every quarter
- The students should complete their chosen qualification within the requirements as agreed with SATI
- The student will be obliged to work within SATI / certified entity in the SA Table Grape Industry
Required Documentation:
- Fully completed application form
- Certified ID document
- Certified Grade 12 results or highest grade passed at school
- All post Grade 12 qualifications, if applicable
- Signed declaration of commitment from the mentor
- Proof of acceptance to or registration at a TE or FET institution, or acceptance to pursue a postgraduate qualification as part of research project team
