SAMSTIP Bursary 2021-2022 – Teacher Internship

The SAMSTIP Bursary Programme will provide financial assistance to students studying either a four year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) Degree or a Postgraduate (PGCE) Degree at the University of South Africa (UNISA). 

The SAMSTIP Bursary Programme will pay for the successful applicant’s tuition fees as well as other study related expenses.

The Southern African Mathematics and Science Teacher Intern Programme (SAMSTIP) has established the SAMSTIP Bursary Programme to help address South Africa’s skills shortage.  SAMSTIP works closely with the Independent Schools Association of South Africa (ISASA) providing Senior and Further Education and Training (FET) programmes.

The SAMSTIP Bursary Programme is primarily aimed at addressing the skills shortage in South Africa, by producing high quality Mathematics and Science educators.  SAMSTIP alongside Investec and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has been tasked with the training of these high quality educators in the departments of Mathematics and Science at ISASA affiliated schools.

Closing Date of the Bursary

Please note that bursary applications for the SAMSTIP Bursary Programme will close on the 24 of May 2021.

Applications received after the closing date will not be considered for the SAMPSTIP Bursary Programme.

Applicants who have not received any feedback within a month of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.

About the Bursary

The SAMSTIP Bursary Programme is aimed at providing financial assistance to students studying either a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) Degree or a Postgraduate (PGCE) Degree at the University of South Africa (UNISA).  The SAMSTIP Bursary Programme will help cover the tuition as well as various other study related expenses of the successful applicant.

SAMSTIP Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

Prospective applicants need to satisfy all of the requirements of the SAMSTIP Bursary in order to be considered for the Programme:

  • Applications are open to South African citizens ONLY.
  • Applications are open to applicants between the ages of 18 and 26.
  • Applicants who have achieved a Bachelor’s Pass with their National Senior Certificate (NSC) or applicants who are currently in Matric.
  • Applicants who are studying/have registered to study at the University of South Africa (UNISA).
  • Applicants studying either a four year bachelor of Education (B.Ed) Degree or a Postgraduate (PGCE) Degree.
  •  Applicants who achieved a 60%+ average for Mathematics on their National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  •  Applicants who achieved a 60%+ average for English on their National Senior Certificate (NSC).
  •  Applicants who achieved a 60%+ average for Physical Science/Life Science on their National Senior Certificate (NSC)

Please note that failure to adhere to the requirements of the SAMSTIP Bursary Programme will result in a rejected application.

SAMSTIP Bursary Coverage

The SAMSTIP Bursary Programme will cover the following study related expenses:

  • The UNISA tuition fees of the successful applicant will be paid for.
  • The prescribed UNISA textbooks of the successful applicant will be paid for.
  • The accommodation of the successful applicant will be paid for.
  • The transport fees of the successful applicant will be paid for.
  • A stipend will be provided to the successful applicant.

Successful applicants will also be provided with:

  • Relevant training at ISASA member colleges/schools.
  • Teaching and learning resources.
  • Mentorship from qualified education professionals.
  • Enrollments into an educational enrichment course.

The following supporting documentation/materials should be attached to the applicant’s application form:

  • The applicant should attach a certified copy of their ID certificate.
  • The applicant should provide a certified copy of their latest matric results if they are currently in their final year of matric.
  • The applicant should provide a certified copy of their tertiary academic history (if any).
  • The applicant should provide proof of their UNISA registration/application.
  • The applicant should provide a motivational letter stating why they believe they should be awarded the SAMSTIP Bursary.

Failure to adhere to the application requirements will result in the application being disregarded.
