1. SAMA The South African Medical Association
SAMA is offering 20 bursaries each year to students who are graduating in the direction of MB.CHb. However this also includes existing students who are already part of this bursary.
They don’t accept first year students, you need to be in your 2nd, 3th or 4th year of study. The bursary reward is R20 000 a person a year. If you are interested in this bursary you will need to apply between 15th of January and 15th of March.

2. The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation Dell Young Leaders
The Dell Young Leaders scholarship is intended for South Africans who are in their first year of study of a STEM subject. The foundation helps disadvantaged students to fund their studies. You will need to do the NSFAS means test to be eligible for this bursary.

3. Department of Health Bursaries
South African provinces provide bursaries every year to their inhabitants and the department of health also provides bursary support for MB.CHb students. Take a look at each department to see what they have to offer for you
SIOC is the Sishen Iron Ore Company and yes they do provide bursaries for medicine students. You can find their advert from last year here, it closed at 17 december so expect new bursaries to be opened a bit before that date.
5. The Compensation Fund Bursary
The Compensation fund is a part of the department of labor. They provide MB.CHb bursaries too. They only provide these bursaries if you are studying at the University of Cape Town, University of Pretoria, or the University of Witwatersrand. You can find more info on their website.
6. The Ikussa Student Financial Aid Programme (ISFAP)
ISFAP provides bursaries to first-year undergraduates with the help of fundings they receive. They support many Universities so take a look to see if you can apply too.

7. The City Of Johannesburg
The city of Johannesburg offers bursaries every year. They have bursaries available for many study fields and they also support Medicine. There are some forms floating around on the internet but the website itself only shows an old advert. It is better to contact them personally to find out when the new bursary will be available (probably around October)

If you are a permanent resident in the city of Ekurhuleni, you can apply for their bursaries. You will need some good Academic results to make a chance but since you are studying Medicine that probably won’t be the problem. 9. IDB Education Trust
The Islamic Development Bank has bursaries for students who are part of the Muslim community. You can read more about their program and decide to apply if you fit their requirements
10. Lonmin Bursary
Lonmin offers bursaries for engineering, geology, IT, HR and Medical Doctor. You will need to have a minimum of 60% to apply for this bursary. You can read more about the Lonmin bursary or find their advert on Pnet.
11. The Motsepe Foundation Bursary
The Motsepe Foundation is part of the Giving Pledge (Bill and Melinda Gates) Their philosophy is Ubuntu, giving and caring for your neighbor. Their bursaries will probably open around August and close around September.
12. Mpumalanga Ephraim Mogale Bursary
This bursary supports the disadvantaged and deep rural communaties in the province of Mpumalanga. If you fit their requirements, they also support medical studies. Ephraim Mogale Bursary
13. The Professional Provident Society Bursary
The PPS foundation offers bursaries to all study fields in the STEM field. They will award bursaries based on Academic results and financial need
14. The HCI Foundation
The HCI Foundation offers bursaries to students with a family income of less than R37 500 a year. They support any study field so check out if you are eligible to apply with them.
15. SAIRR The South African Institute of Race Relations
If your tertiary University of choice is listed with the council of higher education, then you can apply for the SAIRR bursary. They don’t support postgraduate positions
16, The GrandWest Bursary for disadvantaged Students
GrandWest provides support to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Medicine is one of the study fields they support.
