The Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship was founded when the Rhodes Trust partnered with the Mandela Rhodes Foundation in 2003, one of the former presidents, Nelson Mandela’s legacies.

The scholarship allows for postgraduate students from all African countries to continue their studies in South Africa. Since the date of its inception, more than 500 students have been funded from 28 African countries.

By building exceptional leadership skills young Africans are encouraged to make use of their talents, empowering them to serve and build their countries. To be able to serve one’s country and its people is esteemed to be one of the noblest aims.

Closing date of the bursary

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship application’s closing date is 20 April 2021 and there will be no exceptions for late applications.

About This Bursary/Company

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship is a programme dedicated to creating a generation of future leaders by combining leadership development and comprehensive funding. The first-year Honours programme focusses on gaining knowledge and learning, and the second-year Masters programme put into practice all they have learnt.

Those who have assumed leadership, display a strong character, courage, and a willingness to make a difference for others will take part in a programme that will equip young African leaders to thrive in a place of equal opportunity. The scholarship aims, with the right people, to take Africa to its rightful place as a competitive presence in the global world. Allowing young African leaders to grow, develop self-awareness and enagage with others to explore and embrace complexity.

What will the Scholarship cover?

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship will cover:

  • Tuition for a one-year Honours degree or a two-year Masters degree in any registered South African institution of Higher Education
  • Allowance for study materials, research, medical aid, accommodation, and meals
  • Personal allowance
  • Economy class travel between your home country and your choice South African University
  • Maximum of two years

Who Can Apply?

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship awards scholarships to students who are studying a one-year Honours degree or a two-year Masters degree at any South African institution of higher education.

They must meet the following requirement:

  • Any citizen of any African country, however, If not a South African citizen you will need a Passport and VISA
  • Your first degree with an above-average academic result of 70% or above
  • Between ages of 19yrs to 29yrs
  • Registered with a South African University
  • It is advisable to apply to more than one university
  • Completed an undergraduate degree qualification or in your final undergraduate degree year
  • Intend to complete a postgraduate degree (Honours Degree or Masters Degree – MBA degree studies are not included)

How to Apply?

You can only apply online for the Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship.

Step 1: Check the Timelines that will guide you through the process

  • Apply online and access the application platform
  • Upload all relevant documentation and essays
  • Three letters of recommendations will need to be verified online by your chosen recommenders who will need to upload these letters and sign them on the same platform. Without these letters of recommendation, your application will not be considered
  • Two short essays are required: one on your personal journey and the other will be a chosen topic based on the principles of the scholarship
  • If shortlisted, you will need to verify your qualifications with SAQA as soon as possible before uploading the documents

Step two: Check programme requirements

  • Take the 2-minutes quiz to ensure this scholarship is right for you
  • Participation is compulsory for all leadership development programmes and workshops that may take place during weekdays and weekends
  • In your first year of residence, there will be three workshops
  • In your second year of residence, there will be two workshops
  • Dates are provided for the workshops in advance to avoid any clashes with your academic timetable
  • Ensure you respect the conditions of the scholarship
  • Periodically the Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship will require you to complete feedback forms and request for updates

Step three: Ensure you have the relevant documentation before applying

  • Three letters of recommendations
  • Two essays
  • Completed degree qualifications
  • Scanned copy of ID Document / Passport
  • Transcripts of academic results
  • Indicate the proposed course of study on your application

If you are not a South African citizen and do not apply and be accepted into a University well in advance, you will not be able to get a student VISA. Should you be shortlisted for the scholarship you will need to verify your qualifications with SAQA.
