The Bongani Mayosi National Health Scholars Programme (BM-NHSP) is a National Health Research Committee (NHRC) Initiative. It was founded through the partnership between the National Department of Health (NDoH), Public Health Enhancement Fund (PHEF), and the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC).
Inspired by Professor Bongani Mayosi who believed in “health over wealth”, and left a legacy of research excellence, academic development, and the effect to transform individual lives, institutions, and countries within Africa.

About This Bursary
The objective of Bongani Mayosi National Health Scholars Programme (BM-NHSP) is to fund the training of 1000 Ph.D.s in health and clinical research over the next ten years, to build the capacity in four research areas:
- Mental Health
- Violence, Injury, and Trauma
- Digital Health
- Rural Health
The BM-NHSP aims to towards strengthening and speeding up the progress for South African research for capacity development within the National Department of Health Human Capital.
What does the bursary cover?
The Bongani Mayosi National Health Scholars Programme will cover the full duration of the degree as a full-time tax-free scholarship. It depends on the applicant’s after-tax take-home pay, according to the monetary value within the specific occupation qualification.
Applicants must take note that once the benchmarking process has been finalized (based on the criteria at the time) and the scholarship has been awarded. It will remain fixed for the full duration of the study period, the criteria will not change irrespective of a change in criteria e.g. additional qualifications / credentials obtained or an increase in monetary value within the specific occupation qualification.
BM-NHSP Bursary Programme Conditions:
The Bongani Mayosi National Health Scholars Programme invite Ph.D. students to apply for funding and must meet the following conditions:
- Research time must be a minimum of 90%
- Time spent on teaching and clinical activities may not be over 10%
- While under the BM-NHSP Bursary Programme you are not to receive other bursaries, scholarships, grants, or other remuneration.
- You are only permitted to receive one bursary or scholarship from a South African Government institution or business at a given time
- May not receive any other non-binding remuneration/fellowships or grants while under the BM-NHSP Bursary Programme
- You may only register with the University at the time of the application; should you wish to register with a different University you will need approval from SAMRC’s Division of Research Capacity Development
- Should you wish to change your supervisor you must inform AMRC’s Division of Research Capacity Development
- Every six months Supervisors must provide progress reports
- Scholars will be only be considered for a bursary renewal based on academic performance, which is evaluated annually
- You will be required to sign an agreement with SAMRC to complete the studies within a certain time period

Students who have completed a MBChB or hold a Masters’s degree in their 2nd year of Ph.D. studies specializing in any of the fields below may apply:

Eligibility/Requirements:
Please ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements before applying for the bursary.
- South African Citizen / Permanent Resident
- MBChB or a master’s degree
- Must provide an official research proposal
- Must be a registered full-time Ph.D. student
- An experienced research supervisor must provide a written commitment of participation to train the student for the full duration of the degree
- In order for the scholar to effectively complete the research project, the supervisor must confirm funding for the project and the facilities for the scholar

Application forms can be downloaded, however, you can only apply for the Bongani Mayosi National Health Scholars Programme online. All information must be completed and relevant documents provided.
The following additional documentation is compulsory and your application will be discarded if any are missing:
- Certified copy of South African ID document
- Motivational letter (1 page) explaining how your application is suitable for the programme and how the award will have a positive effect on your career
- Curriculum Vitae listing research completed over the past seven years
- Official letter with the first date of registration of the degree
- Proof of ethics clearance
- A motivational letter detailing the availability of research funding or the total cost to fund the research
- Ph.D. proposal must align with the focussed research areas, research plans for translation, publishing of information, and the positive impact of the research project (2 pages)
- Official letter of approval for the final version of your research proposal
- A letter from the institution describing your career plan after your completion of your Ph.D. (1 page)
- A signed commitment form (3 Pages) by the supervisor of their track record, publications, or grants, and experience in the supervision of Ph.D. research students
- Payslip not older than 3 months
